Caprese Salad Recipe Guide
Caprese Salad
Equipment
- Equipment Needed
- Knife (for slicing)
- Serving platter or plates
Ingredients
- Ingredients:
- 4 ripe tomatoes approximately ¼-inch thick slices
- 1 pound fresh mozzarella sliced
- ½ cup fresh basil leaves
- Extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: Balsamic vinegar for extra flavor
Instructions
- Method:
- Slice the Tomatoes and Mozzarella: Use a sharp knife to slice the tomatoes and mozzarella into ¼-inch thick slices.
- Arrange the Salad: On a large serving platter (or smaller plates), alternate slices of tomato and mozzarella, creating a beautiful, circular arrangement.
- Add Basil: Tuck fresh basil leaves between the layers of tomato and mozzarella.
- Drizzle Olive Oil: Generously drizzle extra-virgin olive oil over the salad.
- Season: Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste, and add balsamic vinegar if desired.
- Rest and Serve: Allow the salad to rest for about 20-30 minutes before serving. This helps the flavors to meld and gives time for the tomatoes to release some juice, making the salad even more flavorful.
- Variations:
- Burrata Cheese: Substitute fresh mozzarella with burrata for an even creamier texture.
- Avocado: For a twist, add sliced avocado for a creamy, rich variation.
- Olives: Some versions incorporate olives for a briny, salty bite.
- Tips:
- Fresh mozzarella (ideally packed in water) is best as it stays moist and creamy.
- Don’t skip the resting time – it allows the flavors to meld and enhances the overall experience.
- Make sure to use high-quality extra virgin olive oil to bring out the best flavor.
- Substitutions for Dietary Needs:
- Vegan: Use vegan mozzarella or skip the cheese entirely and add extra veggies or avocado for richness.
- Gluten-Free: Caprese Salad is naturally gluten-free, making it a great option for gluten-sensitive individuals.
