Equipment
- Equipment Needed
- Mixing bowl
- Wooden spoon or spatula
- Baking sheet or pizza stone
- Rolling pin (optional)
- Parchment paper (optional)
- Oven
Ingredients
- Ingredients
- For the Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm water 110°F or 43°C
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- For the Topping
- 1 cup tomato sauce store-bought or homemade
- 8 ounces Italian sausage casing removed
- 1 cup bell peppers sliced (use a mix of colors for a vibrant pizza)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish optional
Instructions
- Method
- Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Mix the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Knead the Dough: Mix until a dough forms, then transfer to a floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let it Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Step 2: Prepare the Toppings
- Cook the Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Sauté the Peppers: In the same skillet, add a little olive oil if needed and sauté the bell peppers until tender, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- Step 3: Assemble the Pizza
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) or higher if your oven allows for pizza cooking.
- Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the dough to your desired thickness (about 12 inches for a standard pizza).
- Add the Sauce: Place the rolled dough onto a baking sheet or pizza stone lined with parchment paper. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the surface.
- Add Toppings: Sprinkle the cooked sausage and sautéed bell peppers over the sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese and sprinkle with oregano.
- Step 4: Bake the Pizza
- Bake: Place the pizza in the preheated oven and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Slice and serve hot.
- Variations
- Vegetarian Option: Substitute the sausage with sautéed mushrooms or eggplant.
- Spicy Kick: Add sliced jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes for heat.
- Cheese Lovers: Mix in different cheeses like provolone or parmesan for added flavor.
