Method
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Mix the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
Knead the Dough: Mix until a dough forms, then transfer to a floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let it Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Toppings
Cook the Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Sauté the Peppers: In the same skillet, add a little olive oil if needed and sauté the bell peppers until tender, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
Step 3: Assemble the Pizza
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) or higher if your oven allows for pizza cooking.
Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the dough to your desired thickness (about 12 inches for a standard pizza).
Add the Sauce: Place the rolled dough onto a baking sheet or pizza stone lined with parchment paper. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the surface.
Add Toppings: Sprinkle the cooked sausage and sautéed bell peppers over the sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese and sprinkle with oregano.
Step 4: Bake the Pizza
Bake: Place the pizza in the preheated oven and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Slice and serve hot.
Variations
Vegetarian Option: Substitute the sausage with sautéed mushrooms or eggplant.
Spicy Kick: Add sliced jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes for heat.
Cheese Lovers: Mix in different cheeses like provolone or parmesan for added flavor.
