  • Variations
  • Vegetarian: This recipe is naturally vegetarian. You can add bell peppers mushrooms, or other vegetables.
  • Gluten-Free: Substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Vegan: Omit cheese and consider using vegan cheese or additional veggies.
  • Tips
  • Dough Preparation: Make sure the water is warm not hot, to activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Resting Time: Allowing the dough to rest is crucial for developing flavor and texture. You can let it rise longer for a more flavorful dough.
  • Baking: If you have a pizza stone preheat it in the oven for 30 minutes before baking for a crispier crust.

Instructions

  • Step-by-Step Instructions
  • Prepare the Dough
  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  • Mix until a dough begins to form. Knead on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • First Rise
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Prepare the Topping
  • While the dough rises, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced Tropea onions and sauté for about 10-12 minutes until soft and caramelized. If desired, stir in balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Set aside to cool.
  • Shape the Pizza
  • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a floured surface. Roll it out into a 12-inch circle (or to your desired thickness).
  • Transfer the dough to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a preheated pizza stone.
  • Assemble the Pizza
  • Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese over the dough. Layer the caramelized onions on top, followed by the remaining cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Bake the Pizza
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  • Serve
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Slice and enjoy your homemade Pizza con Cipolla di Tropea!
