Equipment

  • Equipment Needed: Mixing bowl, rolling pin, pizza stone or baking sheet, oven

Ingredients

  • Ingredients
  • For the Dough:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet 7g active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water 110°F
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • For the Toppings:
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce homemade or store-bought
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Fresh basil leaves optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Step-by-Step Instructions
  • Step 1: Prepare the Dough
  • Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until it forms a dough.
  • Knead the Dough: Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Let the Dough Rise: Shape the dough into a ball, place it back in the mixing bowl, and cover with a kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Step 2: Preheat the Oven
  • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you’re using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it preheats.
  • Step 3: Shape and Roll Out the Dough
  • Roll the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Place it on a floured surface and roll it into a 12-inch circle (or the size that fits your pizza stone/baking sheet).
  • Transfer to Baking Surface: Place the dough on a pizza peel or a floured baking sheet.
  • Step 4: Add the Toppings
  • Spread the Sauce: Using the back of a spoon, spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
  • Add the Cheese and Pepperoni: Sprinkle mozzarella cheese generously over the sauce, then add pepperoni slices on top.
  • Season: Drizzle olive oil over the pizza and season with a little salt and pepper.
  • Step 5: Bake the Pizza
  • Carefully slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or place it in the oven on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Step 6: Serve
  • Cool and Slice: Let the pizza stand for about 5 minutes before slicing. Add fresh basil leaves if desired, then cut into slices and serve hot.
  • Variations and Tips
  • Vegetarian Option: Replace pepperoni with sliced bell peppers, mushrooms, or olives for a veggie pizza.
  • Gluten-Free Version: Substitute the flour with a gluten-free pizza flour blend, or use pre-made gluten-free pizza dough.
  • Vegan Option: Use vegan mozzarella and skip the pepperoni or substitute with vegan sausage.
  • Add Extra Toppings: Feel free to customize with ingredients like onions, roasted garlic, or even a sprinkle of parmesan for added flavor.
  • Make it Spicy: Add red pepper flakes or spicy Italian sausage for a bit of heat.
