Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until it forms a dough.
Knead the Dough: Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rise: Shape the dough into a ball, place it back in the mixing bowl, and cover with a kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you’re using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it preheats.
Step 3: Shape and Roll Out the Dough
Roll the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Place it on a floured surface and roll it into a 12-inch circle (or the size that fits your pizza stone/baking sheet).
Transfer to Baking Surface: Place the dough on a pizza peel or a floured baking sheet.
Step 4: Add the Toppings
Spread the Sauce: Using the back of a spoon, spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
Add the Cheese and Pepperoni: Sprinkle mozzarella cheese generously over the sauce, then add pepperoni slices on top.
Season: Drizzle olive oil over the pizza and season with a little salt and pepper.
Step 5: Bake the Pizza
Carefully slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or place it in the oven on a baking sheet.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 6: Serve
Cool and Slice: Let the pizza stand for about 5 minutes before slicing. Add fresh basil leaves if desired, then cut into slices and serve hot.
Variations and Tips
Vegetarian Option: Replace pepperoni with sliced bell peppers, mushrooms, or olives for a veggie pizza.
Gluten-Free Version: Substitute the flour with a gluten-free pizza flour blend, or use pre-made gluten-free pizza dough.
Vegan Option: Use vegan mozzarella and skip the pepperoni or substitute with vegan sausage.
Add Extra Toppings: Feel free to customize with ingredients like onions, roasted garlic, or even a sprinkle of parmesan for added flavor.
Make it Spicy: Add red pepper flakes or spicy Italian sausage for a bit of heat.
