Method
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Activate the Yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mix the Dough: Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined. If using a dough hook, mix on low speed until the dough comes together.
Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let It Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rest for 30 minutes to rise.
Step 2: Prepare the Toppings
Cook the Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, crumble the Italian sausage and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed and set aside.
Sauté the Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and a pinch of salt. Sauté until they are soft and any liquid has evaporated, about 4-5 minutes. Set aside.
Step 3: Assemble the Pizza
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place your baking sheet or pizza stone inside to heat.
Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a circle or rectangle, depending on your preference, to about 1/4-inch thickness.
Add Sauce: Transfer the rolled dough to a piece of parchment paper (for easy transfer to the oven). Spread the marinara sauce evenly over the surface, leaving a small border for the crust.
Layer the Toppings: Sprinkle the cooked sausage, sautéed mushrooms, and mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Add oregano if desired.
Step 4: Bake the Pizza
Transfer to the Oven: Carefully slide the pizza (on the parchment) onto the preheated baking sheet or pizza stone.
Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden brown.
Step 5: Serve
Garnish and Slice: Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a couple of minutes, then garnish with fresh basil. Slice and serve hot.
Variations
Vegetarian Option: Skip the sausage and add more vegetables like bell peppers, onions, or spinach.
Cheese Lovers: Mix different cheeses like provolone or gouda for a unique flavor.
Spicy Kick: Add crushed red pepper flakes or jalapeños for extra heat.
