Instructions
Prepare the Mackerel:
Rinse the mackerel under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels.
Using a sharp knife, make three diagonal slashes on each side of the fish. This helps it cook evenly and allows the flavors to penetrate the flesh.
Season the Fish:
Drizzle olive oil over both sides of the fish.
Sprinkle salt, pepper, and minced garlic inside the slashes and on both sides.
Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fish and place lemon wedges inside the cavity.
Prepare the Steamer:
Fill a pot with water (about 1-2 inches deep) and bring it to a boil. If using a steamer insert, make sure it sits above the water level.
If you’re adding vegetables, you can place them in the steamer with the fish for added flavor.
Steam the Mackerel:
Carefully place the mackerel in the steamer. Cover with a lid.
Steam for about 15 minutes, or until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.
Serve:
Remove the mackerel from the steamer and transfer it to a serving plate.
Garnish with fresh herbs and serve with additional lemon wedges on the side.
Variations
Herbed Sgombro: Add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for a fragrant twist.
Spicy Version: Include red pepper flakes or sliced chili for a little heat.
Vegetable Medley: Steam a variety of vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli, or carrots, along with the fish.
