  • Using a sharp knife, make three diagonal slashes on each side of the fish. This helps it cook evenly and allows the flavors to penetrate the flesh.
  • Season the Fish:
  • Drizzle olive oil over both sides of the fish.
  • Sprinkle salt, pepper, and minced garlic inside the slashes and on both sides.
  • Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fish and place lemon wedges inside the cavity.
  • Prepare the Steamer:
  • Fill a pot with water (about 1-2 inches deep) and bring it to a boil. If using a steamer insert, make sure it sits above the water level.
  • If you’re adding vegetables, you can place them in the steamer with the fish for added flavor.
  • Steam the Mackerel:
  • Carefully place the mackerel in the steamer. Cover with a lid.
  • Steam for about 15 minutes, or until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.
  • Serve:
  • Remove the mackerel from the steamer and transfer it to a serving plate.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs and serve with additional lemon wedges on the side.
